Australian Shepherds
Defiance Australian Shepherds began in 1996 when a red ball of fur entered my life.  "Northland Johnny
Walker Red"  aka "WALKER" was the first Australian Shepherd to bless my world. Being new to the "dog
world" I did not do enough homework and he was purchased without enough knowledge of his background or
the options of the Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA).  But he opened that door to what would
become a passion more than a hobby.

Today Defiance Australian Shepherds is a small kennel with puppies available on a very limited basis.  They
can be seen across the Midwest in the conformation ring, the stock arena, running an agility course, tracking,
as multi-service service dogs, therapy dogs and just great home companions and best buddies.

I breed for dogs that are red or will hopefully carry the gene for red as it is my personal preference in color.  I
also breed to the
ASCA breed standard as the only standard for the Australian Shepherd I believe in.  Our
dogs are not (to my knowledge) used for the purposeful breeding of dogs outside the size preference for the
breed. ASCA does not recognize the North American Shepherd (aka Miniature Australian Shepherd) as a size
variety of the Australian Shepherd.  They are two separate breeds and not to be confused with one another.

In 2002 Indigo lost his spleen due to a tumor and had a long period of ill health.  That moment was the
beginning of my search into a healthier lifestyle for my dogs.  I experimented with the raw diet, but felt the
amount of supplementation and veggies required made it not much different than a commercial diet.  At that
time I did make the choice to remove Indigo's medications and end vaccinations.  The improvements to his
health were incredible and we have not looked back since. With the recent pet food recall, I again researched
the raw diet and have switched my dogs totally to a diet consisting of fresh raw meat from sources I know.
At this time I am looking for a homeopathic vet for our "medical needs" and I am attuned to the Reiki (ray key)
Master/Teacher level so that we may explore another level of care.  In addition I have completed Animal
Communication level 1 (which was incredible experience).

The Australian Shepherd is a busy, intelligent animal that requires a fair amount of regular grooming,
exercise, training and attention to ensure they are the great working or companion animal they can be.  They
are not however for everyone.  Before purchasing any dog you should do lots of research on the breed,
breeders in your area, rescue organizations and animal shelters to be certain you are adding the right animal
for your family's needs and circumstances.
